Church of San Miguel Arcángel

Moreruela de Tábara

12th century

The church throughout history has undergone numerous changes in the old monastery of Santiago de Moreruela which is dated from the 9th century. Has been preserved from this time two frieze fragments embedded in the northern wall and other in the eastern headwall.

The present church dates from the 12th or 13th century and has basilica plan with a nave and 2 aisles separated by a pointed series of arches supported by square pillars and decorated with enigmatic figures and plant motifs. The head part has 3 rectangular chapels. The middle one is wider than the side chapels.

This church has many Romanesque features, ornamental pieces, and on the eastern wall is a walled-up rose window, similar to those of the churches of the capital. Imposts and ashlar appear with four-petal bands, entwined chain, helicoidal wheels, rosettes in stars and clipeus.
