Church of Santo Sepulcro

Zamora

12th century

This is a 12th-century temple. The church of Santo Sepulcro (Holy Sepulchre) was founded by the monks of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, originally as a monastery. When the order disappeared in 1489, it passed into the hands of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, to which it belonged to until 1849, when it became answerable to the parish of San Frontis.

It belongs to a poorly-decorated simple Romanesque style, which is showed at the corbels.
This is a church with a nave floor plan, divided into three sections, extended by a rectangular apse. Its tower, which top is cut since ancient times, is placed at temple foot.

The inner part of the head section is covered with a pointed barrel vault, while the nave is covered by a 15th-century framework, where have been preserved polychrome traces.

Outside, near the entrance, Gothic wall paintings stand out where you can make out some Passion scenes. The tower had a defensive purpose and is topped with a patriarchal cross which can also be seen painted on the window tympanum.

In 1977 it was classed as being of cultural interest in Zamora province and monument category.
