Church of San Antolín

Zamora

13th century

This church had originally a Romanesque structure, but over time it has undergone many transformations, although the Gothic head which is covered with a ribbed vault has been preserved.

It was founded by emigrants from Palencia during The Repopulation for housing the statue of the Virgin called “Virgen de San Antolin” or “Virgen de la Concha”. She was discovered during a day of hunting by King Don Sancho III of Navarre the Great, in the Visigothic crypt of the Cathedral of Palencia. In 1100 she was acclaimed the patron saint of Zamora and the construction of the temple started immediately.

Have been preserved the back southern wall and its corbels from the Romanesque construction. However its current construction is the result of a complex historical evolution: the southern doorway is late Gothic, the belfry and the apse were built during the 16th century and can be seen star-shaped vaults too.

It currently has a Latin-cross floor plan with a nave and a transept with asymmetrical sides. They are covered with a coffered ceiling and framework respectively, except for the head part, which is square and has angular buttresses. It is covered with a star-shaped vault.

In the altarpiece is currently housed the image of the "Virgen de la Peregrina", but this space was taken up by the image of the "Virgen de la Concha" which is now housed in the church called San Vicente.
