Church of San Juan del Mercado

Benavente

12th century

The nave consists of 4 sections and is covered with wood. It is twice as wide as the sides. Inside, it consists of 4 large columns with cross section in the easternmost side and 4 smaller in the westernmost one. All of them have attached semi-columns.

The head part includes a straight section chancel with a reinforced barrel vault and triple semicircular apse, which is wider and advanced at the center and has a quarter-sphere vault. It is reinforced by two semi-columns and has three loopholes with interior effusion.

The church has three Romanesque-style doorways. The south facing one stands out for its iconographic development. It consists of a slightly-pointed semicircular arch supported by plain jambs and three splayed archivolts on pairs of columns with decorated capitals and sculptures.

The doorway of the northern wall in the transept is formed by a semicircular arch and two archivolts on staggered jambs with two pairs of columns. The capitals have plant motifs. The shafts rest on bases with saw-tooth decoration.

The doorway of the western facade consists of a semicircular arch on jambs in capitals with curly-acanthus and shoots motifs ending in buds. It is surrounded by 3semicircular archivolts. On this doorways can be seen a coat of arms with the cross of Malta.
