Monastery of Valparaíso

Peleas de Arriba

12th century

In this place it is likely that in 1199 was born Fernando III, the Saint. He was son of Alfonso IX of León and Berenguela of Castile, who gave birth while she was camping in the scrubland because she was traveling from Salamanca to Zamora.
Fernando III ordered to build a monastery in that place.

Initially, here was a shelter founded by the religious called Martin Cid of Zamora, for pilgrims that followed the “Vía de la Plata” of the “Camino de Santiago”.

However, after the confiscations is hardly anything of this monastery. From this period can only be seen cellars with semicircular arches and a nearby fountain, called “La Fuente de los Angeles”.
